type='text'>About Superhuman Fitness

Aloha, friend! I'm Levon Basso, CSCS, trainer and owner of Superhuman Fitness, Strength, and Conditioning. I appreciate the time you've taken to get to know more about me and my services. Time to get personal!

I'm a 32 year old father of two precious little ones, daughter age 5, son age 2. I'm from Honolulu and Hawaii is my home but I've also lived quite the hybrid life, having spent many years on the mainland in several different states as well as some time abroad in the Philippines. I'm a positive, upbeat, yet laid-back kind of guy by nature. I am, however, very passionate about a lot of different things. First and foremost among those things is my faith and my family - they (especially the two little ones mentioned) mean everything to me! All else in life aside, these are things I cannot do without!

Running a close second to those things is my love of fitness and physical activity in general. Like you, I love and live to be active, especially outdoors. I also believe that while achieving and maintaining fitness is important in and of itself, this achievement also serves the larger purpose of enhancing everything else we do in life and enabling us to do all of it, better. None of us, including myself as a trainer, exist as free-standing "fitness entities", independent of everything else. Even if we could, what would be the use of that? We are all a part of friendships, family relationships, businesses, communities, causes, governments, etc. and all of the interactions we maintain in these settings are enhanced by the way in which we take care of our bodies. In this aspect, I view what I do as a work that directly improves people's physical health, but also improves their overall health and well-being by increasing their capacity to accomplish much in the way of good and positivity in the world. Even though it's my livelihood, I view what I do as a service in the truest sense of the word and am thankful for the opportunity to at least potentially be a part of this ripple effect for good and positive productivity.

The sum of my many and varied experiences both at home in Hawaii and elsewhere make me well-suited to personally customize my services to the diverse interests, needs, and characteristics of the clients I strive to serve. Regarding my fitness, athletic, and educational background:

I've been an athlete and loved sports ever since I can remember and have participated in 4 years of competitive high school athletics, lettering in football, basketball, and track and field. In addition, I also competed on the collegiate level in football and basketball (6 years apart from each other, no less!). My current favorite fitness pursuits include bodyboarding, basketball, running, strength training, and total-body beach/sand conditioning.

I graduated cum laude from Brigham Young University-Hawaii in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Exercise and Sport Science. Soon after in 2004, I earned the prestigious Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential from the National Strength Conditioning Association (currently certified through December 2011).

Since BYU-Hawaii, I've pursued a few different things in the way of graduate education, including some time in medical school to become a physician. I am currently set on pursuing my dreams and aspirations in the fitness field, however, and I am presently working on a Master of Science degree in Human Movement from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences. Is your life so busy that it's difficult for you to even leave the house or your workplace to get a workout? Confined to your home for other reasons? Give tele-training a try!

Superhuman will work with you in your home, office, or other convenient location to provide challenging, fun, and effective workouts, live via the internet. Although we will certainly make use of fitness equipment you may already have, Superhuman prides itself on delivering creative, innovative, and enthusiastic tele-training workouts using common household items and your own body weight.

In terms of technical requirements, all you really need is a well-lit room or other exercise space, a computer with speakers, a webcam or external video camera capable of providing streaming video, and a high-speed internet connection. We'll make use of one of several free options out there to set up the video conferencing (a very simple process to set up, if you aren't already familiar with "video-chatting").

In trying to bring this convenient service to as many clients as possible, we strive to keep our tele-training rates as low as possible. There is MUCH that could be said of this...and more will be said tomorrow! Until then, consider all the varied components that might go into how you structure and organize your own restriction of calories.

July 21, 2010

Continuing yesterday's thought, we need to create a caloric deficit, ideally on a consistent daily basis, if we have any expectations of losing excess bodyfat. Obviously, we use our muscles in exercise as a tool in helping to create that deficit.

There's LOTS more to the following concept, which perhaps we can cover in the future, but basically our muscles as we view or think of them are made up of massive numbers of microscopic contractile units, each of which individually use energy liberated from chemical processes to perform their work of contraction to produce movement. Again, there's a whole lot more detail than that simplistic explanation provides, but the point is this: on a muscle vs. muscle basis, the larger the muscle(s) used, the more total energy will be needed (i.e. calories burned). Contracting the muscles of my thigh require far more energy than contracting the muscles around my eye that enable me to blink. This concept is something to consider when planning your workouts because unless you love spending massive amounts of time exercising, you'll want to choose exercises and activities that make the most out of the above principle in order to reach your goal of the most amount of bodyfat reduction in the least amount of time (assuming, of course, you're like most people and that is indeed a goal of yours!).

As an example - barbell squats vs dumbbell bicep curls - the squats utilize far larger muscles (not to mention a larger number of total individual muscles working as a group) than the bicep curls and thus will burn more calories.

Keep this principle in mind in choosing exercises - as much as you can, include ones that utilize larger muscles, muscle groups with large and/or multiple muscles, and have intensity levels on the higher side (e.g. running > walking, weighted squats > body weight squats, etc.). The bottom line is the more muscle you use and the higher the intensity level as you use them, the more calories you burn!

July 20, 2010

The main key to losing weight (i.e. excess bodyfat - we shouldn't be content to simply lose weight - not all weight loss is created equally!), as we all know, is to create what can be called at caloric deficit by utilizing more calories through exercise than we are taking in through food intake (notice how I framed that relationship! ;) ).

3500 calories are the equivalent of the energy stored in 1 lb. of bodyfat. If you want to lose a pound per week, which seems modest but is realistically a very sound, achievable, and healthy goal, you need to create an average daily caloric deficit of 500 calories between what you are expending and what you are taking in (500 calories x 7 days = 3500 calories).

So what's the best way about getting there? Check back tomorrow for more on this topic...

July 19, 2010

It's been a while but in honor or what I'm going to start calling "Motivational Mondays", here's something I've been thinking about ever since a conversation I had with a client last week.

While talking about potential excuses people might have for avoiding exercise they know they should be doing, it occurred to me that there is very little separation between one individual'sexcuse for not working out and another's reason for working out. Often times, the issue might be the same thing! For example, one might feel he or she can't work out or it's too hard to do so because he or she is too heavy, out of shape, lethargic, etc. Another person, on the other hand, might also be all those same things but view them as the reasons he or she wants to work out. Following either logic in response to the obstacle will almost assuredly take a person in two very different respective directions and land that person in two very distant places, depending on how long he or she chooses to follow such logic. What a difference a choice (yes, a CHOICE) in viewpoint and approach to exercise can make!

So don't give yourself excuses, or a way out. Give yourself reasons, or a way forward!

~

"To reach a goal you have never before attained, you must do things you have never done."

When it comes to fitness goals, how many of us are guilty of trying to achieve higher results using the same lower-order habits and consistency?! I know I am at times. Keep the above thought in mind, live by it, and reap the rewards :).

~

1 lb. of bodyfat = approximately 3500 calories of energy

Let that simple fact guide your monitoring of your fitness and nutrition accounting. For the most part, the formula is simple: if you want to lose fat weight (the only weight you should be concerned about losing), through a combination of increasing expenditure and decreasing energy intake, you need to create a calorie deficit of 3500 to lose 1 lb. of fat.

As was mentioned, there's more to the story than just that simple math (for example, eating nothing to create that deficit is NOT HEALTHY!), but this simple concept is an important one to remember for anyone trying to lose weight and achieve a leaner overall body mass.

~

Park as far away from the entrance of stores, buildings, etc. as you can. Why? Obviously, you have to walk farther, thereby increasing the number of calories burned (and if you have kids, you get a better bicep workout, too!). This may seem to be of little significance, but cliche as it might sound, all the little things really do add up.

For many of us, where we are at the present time compared to where we want to be with our fitness levels is something we likely consider a huge and mighty task to be accomplished. But, to use an analogy, the giant tree in the woods doesn't come down with one single swing of the ax, no matter how strong one is, no matter how sharp the ax. It takes consistent, well-timed, well-placed hacks. The same is true with our attempts to achieve our fitness goals.

In addition, getting into the habit of doing the "little things", even if you start with just one, gets you into a more regular mode of thinking and searching for other little things that you can do to take better hacks at that tree, if you will. In my experience and observations, however, ignoring that little inner voice that gently encourages you to do the little things leads to "hearing" it less and less.

So, one thing at a time, but start hacking away at that tree. The chips will start to fly and pretty soon, that tree will fall!

~

When it comes to our efforts to achieve change that we deem desireable, all of us tend to have a pre-set notion about our natures. We might call this our "default perception" of ourselves. For many of us, we find ourselves on the treadmill of ever being in the pursuit of that desireable thing that we're not, or at least something we have yet to become. For many of us, this is painfully evident when we slip into comparing ourselves to others, or around this time of the year when we're making New Year's plans or resolutions but we start to get discouraged and intimidated by daunting tasks that may lie in front of us.

Let's examine the expression, "Something we're not" - therein lies a big part of the problem! The default perception we often have of ourselves is a negative one, a nature that is inherently "bad" or opposite of what we would like it to be. Whether it be our nature with regard to a fit lifestyle, the way in which we treat those around us, or any other "way of being", we all tend to have mindsets of who we are, mindsets that can prove stifling and impossible to overcome.

I would suggest that most of these mindsets are not accurate ones. However difficult to accomplish, these default perceptions MUST be overcome! Think of this general statement a person might make who is starting out the new year with hopes of a new healthier lifestyle: "I'm going to stick with a fitness routine this year." In my mind, the use of the phrase "stick with" implies that this person's deeply-held belief is that he/she is NOT the type of person who naturally will engage in regular fitness-building activities. Else why the need to say, "stick with"?

By no means am I suggesting that we eliminate the use of positive self-talk or other positive inner motivational tactics on ourselves. But I am suggesting that most of us could benefit from looking deeper at the way we think about and view ourselves as a potential barrier to our achieving our goals (We're often our own worst enemy!). Positive change, for it to last, has to be about so much more than just establishing good habits. Perhaps there's a better word for it, but I think 'conversion' describes best what needs to happen in our hearts and minds to help us truly become who we feel we ought to become. Gritty determination and willpower can establish good habits, even for extended periods of time. But I believe that if such habits are not founded upon a true and genuine nature, there will be inner conflict, a lack of peace, and probably an eventual faltering of that determination.

How do we accomplish that? Well, I'm sorry to say that there's no magic bullet, that it takes a lot of work! A lifetime of it, in fact :). (And I'm probably not qualified enough to be a teacher on that, although I know of plenty of resources out there which are) But starting with overcoming irrational core beliefs and re-setting our default perception of ourselves can be a powerful agent in achieving positive change! Something to keep in mind as the new year unfolds.....

Superhuman Testimonials

Read what people are saying about Superhuman Fitness!

Fitcamp

"Great class with great people! The workouts are challenging and no two sessions are the same. After just two short weeks, I had enough stamina to begin walking 4 miles per week and it's now up to 10 miles a week. Levon is a patient trainer who stamina will work with you according to your fitness level. Thanks to Superhuman Fitness, I look and feel better than I have in years."

-K.K.

"I wanted someone to challenge me both physically and mentally - and that's what I got. Levon never took it easy on me - he pushed me to do better than my best. Levon is very encouraging, motivational and knowledgeable. Add that with his enthusiasm, daily changing routines, and contagious smile and you've got a recipe for fun and results. I quickly began to see changes in my body which created the desire for more knowledge and gave me the motivation to do more on my own. Working out is now a fun thing. This class is the best decision I've made because it gave me all I wanted and more! Don't be afraid. Jump right in - it's so worth it!"

-Shawna

"Highly recommended fitness class! Meaningful progress doesn't really come when it's easy and completely doable! You take big leaps forward and get better - whatever you targeted 'better' might be - when it's hard and when you think you can't, but you dig deep into your resolve and choose to do it anyway.

I also think that the above quote most definitely applies in pretty much all situations in life, not just fitness, in which we are earnestly striving to reach higher in achieving goals. So keeping this thought in mind, remember two things - push through challenging barriers, no matter how hard it seems, and if you feel like you're stuck or not reaching goals like you think you should, ask yourself (and be honest about the answers!) if you're doing the same old thing or if it's time to do more in order to get more!

Click here for past Fitness Thoughts

Superhuman Training Schedule

Below are current Fitcamp class locations and schedules. (Ideal class size is 10 participants, but I'm typically okay with starting a class with as few as 3-4 participants with the idea that we will continually add more)

Recruiting has financial perks, too - see the Current Promotions page!

Helpful ideas before starting your first Fitcamp class

Fitcamp is fun and you'll have a blast as you obtain those long-awaited results, but it'll be much more enjoyable if you're not just getting up off the couch before your first training session! Get going on something while you wait - walking, swimming, surfing, biking, yard work, jogging...anything is better than nothing.

STRETCH - your body will be pushed to the limit at Fitcamp in ways you're probably not accustomed to. Life will be much better for you during, after, and between training sessions if you have at least some degree of flexibility. There are lots of resources online if you need help with stretches. Try a Google search for 'stretching exercises' or contact Superhuman for some ideas.

Make sure you've got a favorite water bottle and a decent-sized towel or exercise mat ready to bring with you to your Fitcamp sessions.

Start thinking about changes you might need to make in your nutritional habits. Fitcamp provides the best results if you're fueling your body properly. Our bodies simply do not feel great when we're working out hard but are eating things we shouldn't. Unless your aim is to become an elite athlete, there's no magic secret to eating right for performance and results. HONEST AWARENESS of your habits and tendencies is an excellent first step - monitoring total caloric intake, making wise food choices (and exercising self-control over unwise ones!), reading food labels, avoiding rationalizing of choices and quantities, and keeping a record of foods eaten/serving sizes are all good starting points that most of us can immediately benefit greatly from.

Lastly...be excited and optimistic! You are walking into a situation in which you'll be working with a qualified, experienced, and personable trainer who is eager to work with you and is dedicated to doing all he can to help pave the way for you to reaching all of your goals and then some. A Superhuman you is in your future at Fitcamp!

Contact Superhuman

If you'd like to contact me, please e-mail or call anytime. The workouts primarily use the challenges of the terrain and surroundings (hills, trees, sand, park benches, etc.) and your own body weight. The exercises are performed in rapid-fire succession with the aim of burning the most amount of calories possible within each hour-long session. In short, it is high-efficiency, no-fluff exercise designed to get results! In addition, no two Fitcamp workouts are exactly the same, keeping things fresh and exciting as well as keeping your body guessing, never letting it settle into a routine, thereby ensuring continued progress toward your fitness goals.

Run-down of a typical workout session:

Show up at the training site a few minutes early to do loosen up your body and do some light stretching on your own.

The workout begins with 5-10 minutes of warm-up and movement preparation exercises.

Then transition to 40-45 minutes for the main exercise program for the day.

Finally, 5-10 minutes of cool-down and stretching.

Sounds pretty intense - I'm not sure if I can stay with it...
Not to worry! All that's required is a minimal amount of sign-up paperwork, your payment, and deciding which class you'd like to join. Again, please check the current training schedule for ongoing and forming classes. Contact me today to get the ball rolling!

808.226.1010

superhumanfitness@gmail.com

Come Join Us at Fitcamp!

Fitcamp is specialized group fitness training in which participants engage in a variety of high intensity exercises in rapid succession using various objects, their own body weight, and the natural challenges of the terrain of various outdoor settings.
